The cost of St. Andrews Park in Tiverton has doubled to more than $200,000, thanks to gas tanks that had to be removed from the site before the park could be completed.

Located southeast of the main intersection, the park came in with an initial price tag of $104,000. Then, the gas tanks were discovered, straddling St. Andrews Park and Leggett Lane, and the municipality had to pay $120,000, including landfill fees of $60,000, to have them removed.

"Why didn't we just pave over the whole thing when we discovered the gas tanks there?" asked councillor Guy Anderson.

Staff said that once the tanks were discovered, the municipality had no choice but to remove them.

Anderson asked why the park was fenced off during the Tiverton Reunion when it was supposed to be a reunion project.

"The company had just laid sod and wanted a two-week period so it would 'take' before the park was opened to the public," said chief administrative officer John deRosenroll.

"It's unfortunate that we found gas tanks there and it cost more money," said councillor Randy Roppel, adding that the bonus - if there is one - is that the Ontario Ministry of the Environment said the fill could be used for cover at the landfill site.
