Julia's has been in business for 26 years. Owner/operator Julia Sandel opened her tanning and aesthetic studio in 1983 at 530 Queen St., at the south end of town, working on her own out of one room.

As business picked up, she hired staff and they quickly ran out of room, so in August, 1988, she moved to the current location in the heritage home on Durham Market North. In October, 1996, an addition was built at the back, providing more than double the space of the original shop.

The restaurant opened in 2000 for luncheons and afternoon teas, but became so popular, Sandel added dinners and evening meals and began catering.

She has four full-time employees and seven part-time staff. Tania Rees, the singing aesthetician, has been with Julia's for 20 years and is famous for her work on finger nails. Hairstylist Darlene Carriere has worked there for seven years; Claire Thomas, a British-trained hairstylist and aesthetician, has worked there for five years; and Janet Leaning, a relaxation therapist and aesthetician, just joined the team this year.
