Is the Ball Rolling for a New Pool?

Staff presents alternatives  ...

... to swim or not to swim

Jane Jagelewski, representing the Town's Community Services, presented a public meeting schedule regarding the issue centered around the possible construction of a municipal swimming pool.

"Residents are being invited to attend two upcoming meetings, on December 1st and December 9th, to express their views regarding the possibility of constructing a new municipal swimming pool facility," explained Jagelewski. "Whether they agree or disagree with the concept, whether they would or would not be users of a swimming pool facility, residents should come out and express their opinions." The present pool used by the community is located at the local high school, Saugeen District Secondary School (SDSS) but, according to the Bluewater schoolboard, it will not be part of any renovation or new build school in the future.

The next two meetings scheduled are part of a five phase planning process where potential amenities and site options will be discussed. At the beginning of each of the public meetings, the options raised will be reviewed:

Councillor Diane Huber said that she was very concerned about the way the entire swimming pool issue was being presented to the public. "The ball seems to be rolling and I think it's very important to let people know that we have not, repeat not, decided to build a pool. We are being presented with three sets of options and asking 'what do you want'? At some point we need to have a fundamental discussion and I think it's critical to tell the public at what phase a decision will be made."

Mayor Mike Smith said that the Town was giving the public every opportunity put forward their input. "The discussion of whether we go any further is something we have to find out. We have to find out if there is, or isn't, any public support for this project."

Jagelewski affirmed that the town will continue to fact find before any decisions are made.

Councillor Victoria Serda said that people who are not in favour should also plan on attending. "We need community feedback as there is no point in going ahead with a project this size if there is no community support."
