Internet Tips

Over the last week or two, we've visited four homes that have multiple computers and use wireless communication.

The growth of the Internet locally is amazing.

Here is a tip that might help some users....

It's come to our attention that some folks tie their laptops into the net via an Ethernet cable like I do.  This gets you more bandwidth (speed).  I have the ability to tie in wireless too and have other computers that are both wireless and connected directly.

If you are running Vista and you've set up a connection to your fiber optic cable or DSL and have your machine 'listening to wireless signals", you might notice that it gets confused at startup.  It MAY connect automatically or attempt to connect to a wireless signal and you want to connect to the broadband directly.

This will cause the operating system to get confused and you'll have to disconnect everything and re-connect to just the broadband (DSL or Fibre Optic).  You can get around this by just turning off the wireless signal 'ear' to your computer.  It's usually a switch on the side of the machine that you may not have noticed.

People who don't know about this switch often flip it off by mistake shoving their machine in and out of a carrying case.  They get to a place where they want to connect wirelessly and pooooooof, nothing works.  Just make sure you notice the switch and its position.  We hope this helps
