Kincardine council has granted approval for an interim off-leash dog park on property south of the ball diamond in Legion Park (Ward 1).

Recreation director Karen Kieffer said the municipality will work with the Kincardine Dog Owners Group (KinDOG) to design the park, marking off the proposed area, and developing and installing park fencing and signage. The municipality will be responsible for providing garbage cans, lawn maintenance and liability insurance.

The recreation committee is putting $1,700 toward the park, with KinDOG securing $1,700 through an Enbridge community grant and coming up with the remaining $1,700 needed for the fencing, through fund-raising, said Kieffer. It's expected the interim park will be open by July, she said. In previous discussions with council, KinDOG wanted to use the land at the Ward 1 landfill site, once it had been rehabilitated, for a permanent dog park, but that land would not be available for a year or more.

"So we're spending money on this (interim park) only to shut it down in a year's time," said councillor Ron Hewitt.
"We can re-use the fencing and that's the major cost at $5,000," said Kieffer.

Council agreed to go ahead with the interim park.
