Infrastructure Along Rail Trail Approved by Town Council

Town Council recently approved an agreement with Bell Aliant to install fibre infrastructure along sections of the Rail Trail south of Southampton.

The project will eventually connect to Bruce Power, one of Bell Aliant's largest customers. The first part of the proposed route will start immediately at Spark's Corner, go south on Carlisle to Hwy. 21 and to the Rail Trail.

According to Bell Aliant, there will be little disruption to the Trail's surface and, in those areas that are considered 'sensitive', the cable will be installed through directional drilling.

Any potential damage to the Trail will be assumed by Bell Aliant and the completion of the work is expected to be completed in the spring.

Bell Aliant is to provide a one-time donation of $67,500 to the Town for future trail expansion within the municipality and has agreed to "leave the trail in an improved condition applying a fresh layer of stone dust upon work completion and toally restoring the entire work area along the trail."

Bell Aliant will also provide a $7,5000 one-time donation to the Town to be used for decorative benches and decorative information mileage markers along the route. In return, the Town has agreed to recognize Bell Aliant's contribution by placing their logo and/or name on the benches and mileage marker signs on the existing trail and new trails that result from Bell Aliant financial donations.
