High Street to get needed work

Town Council

(continued)

Southampton's High Street, from Albert Street to Victoria Street, is about to get some needed work, but not before people have the opportunity to bring forward beautification ideas for the area.

When first presented to Council, town staff anticipated that sidewalks and other cosmetic work would also have to be done in addition to infrastructure work that includes:

  • street light ducts for future decorative street lights to be installed either this fall or in the spring
  • conduit for the option to place electrical services underground
  • removal and replacement of existing asphalt from curb to curb
  • replacement of the watermain and minor drainage improvements north side of the Town Hall

Staff are now working with members of the former Southampton Streetscape group in the hopes of enhancing this particular block of High Street, particularly, as it relates to green space versus concrete.

When asked by Councillor Diane Huber how long the project was expected to take, Dave Burnside head of the town's engineering, explained that it would take approximately six weeks.

With the original budgeted amount of $300,000 and the winning bid by Doug Welsh Construction of $187,858.25 and another $28,174.24 for engineering services, Councillor Luke Charbonneau pointed out that, "There are now some reserves to make that the showpiece of Southampton, as it should be, and we are certainly open to suggestions from the Streetscape 'members'."

"That's exactly why we wanted to wait," said Burnside. "We want ideas to be brought forward as to what people in Southampton want before we go ahead with the work.
