Heritage Plaque Awarded Lynda and Bryan Bedborough receive a Heritage Plaque awarded by Joyce Johnston, Heritage Committee Chairperson (right) Click to enlarge. The Saugeen Shores Municipal Heritage Committee (formerly LACAC) has once again presented a plaque in recognition of a local home's heritage. The farm-style home is owned by Lynda and Bryan Bedborough and is located at 376 Clarendon St. in Southampton. The home has been researched on four separate occasions by volunteers of the Committee with no definite date being determined other than through an early tax assessment tax assessment. Joyce Johnston, Chairperson of the Heritage Committee said that, "The plaque reads that the home was built in c.1900 however, we are almost certain it was well before that and it may have been Southampton's original farmhouse." The Property Plaque Program was originally established to recognize and hopefully preserve historic homes in the area. Owners can apply to have a plaque placed on their home. It will indicate the date, or in some cases, approximate date, of construction along with the name and occupation of the original owner. "The research is done entirely by volunteers," points out Johnston, "and, sometimes, such as in this case, it can take a year before any determination is made. Anyone who feels their home has historical heritage can apply by calling 832-2008 or by visiting the Saugeen Shores Municipal Website." Joyce Johnston, Chair of the Municipal Heritage Committee, presented the group's List of Priorities for 2008 to the Town Council on January 14, 2008. (Read More)

Runyan Cottage Celebrates 100th Birthday
Marjorie Runyan and Jack Todd People along Southampton's shore came together Tuesday night to celebrate a 100th birthday. It wasn't the birthday of a person but, instead, was a celebration by a family who wanted to remember the home generations have spent the past 62 summers.Family matriarch, Marjorie Runyan explains. The Daisy', as the house is known, was built in 1907 by George and Eva Scheeler and later sold to a Professor Boehmer. When he died in 1944, the property was put up for sale and my mother-in-law happened to be strolling the old boardwalk when she spied the for-sale sign. The Runyans decided that they could afford the $4,000 price and purchased the home complete with all the wicker furniture that the Scheelers had originally brought." With a wrap-around veranda and elegant white exterior, the house is reminiscent of an earlier time While most people celebrate birthdays, in
Southampton, they also celebrate and honour the birthdays of heritage buildings. Runyan Cottage Click to Enlarge |
