Hanover Freeride Bicycle Park Moves Forward

On Thursday afternoon, Bill Murdoch, MPP for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound, presented an Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) grant of $13,300 to Hanover to help create a "Free Ride Bicycle Park".

"A park for bike riding is great, especially for kids," said Murdoch. "They'll be able to enjoy mountain biking and trail riding in a safe environment.  Parents will not have to fear their children getting hurt while biking and being too far away from home."

Freeride cycling combines Mountain Biking with trail features that offer a challenging, yet safe outdoor experience. Over the next year, the OTF grant will be used to excavate, grade and contour a four kilometer trail and build 20 features. These features are made out of wood and are installed to challenge the skill, balance and ability of cyclists. The new park, set to be completed in 2009, will provide local youth and adults with another opportunity to be physically active.

"Freeriding is gaining tremendous popularity across the country and we are thrilled to be able to provide this opportunity in Hanover."

"There is tremendous excitement and anticipation in Hanover as more and more of our residents are looking for healthy and challenging outdoor activities," said Dale Steinhoff, Town of Hanover Parks and Facilities Manager.

The Town of Hanover Parks and Recreation Department will be working with the executive of the Hanover Freeriders Association to run the park.  The association will ensure the new park is supervised by a group of experienced, certified youth (in the age range of 16 to 25 years) from Hanover.  For more information please contact the Hanover Parks and Recreation Dept. at 364-2310 or Chris Sanderson from the Hanover Freeride Association.
