The Kincardine Nimrod Gun Club wants Huron-Kinloss to help put up a fence on the unopened road allowance between the gun club property and the adjacent Green Acres Campground, on the 12th concession.

At the general committee meeting Monday night (Nov. 2), Tim McGinnis of the gun club said the group has no interest in putting up a fence, but it was suggested by the Chief Firearms Officer of Ontario in the wake of an investigation into complaints by campers that shots were being fired at the campground during the summer.

McGinnis also told council that someone at the campground had said that children would run through the road allowance area onto the gun club property if there were nothing to stop them.

"If it's a common fence, then both landowners share the cost," he said. "We're trying to come up with a solution. It wouldn't be a permanent fence, just a glorified snow fence, but we need a little help to do it."

Public works director Hugh Nichol said there is no benefit to the township in putting up the fence as the road is used for recreational purposes only and the boundaries are clearly defined. If council wanted to proceed, then a survey would be required and the clearing of trees, brush and shrubs to establish lot lines.

"If the township has to pay for the fence, the answer is no," said councillor Jim Hanna. "Where is our liability in this?"

"We're not asking you to pay the whole shot," said McGinnis.

"It could be a three-way agreement," said mayor Mitch Twolan, "including the campground, the Nimrod Club and the township."

"You could run it along the tree line," said McGinnis. "The idea of the fence is to keep the children out."

Council agreed to have the gun club come up with a cost estimate for a fence and then work from there.

Twolan said when he toured the gun club property, he was impressed with the safety factors already in place there.
