Taking part in the ground-breaking at St. Andrews Park in Tiverton are Guy Anderson (L), Karen Kieffer, Lisa Robertson-Taylor, Lorraine McIntosh, Ed Roberts, Marilyne Wilson and John deRosenroll

The new park in Tiverton is a bit over-budget but it will be done on time before the Tiverton Reunion at the end of July.

The ground-breaking ceremony was held Friday afternoon with several of the major players on hand to hoist the first shovel of dirt, including park committee chairperson Marilyne Wilson, committee members Lisa Robertson-Taylor, Lorraine McIntosh and Ed Roberts, Kincardine councillor and chairman of the recreation committee Guy Anderson, recreation director Karen Kieffer, and chief administrative officer John deRosenroll.

The park is located just east of the commercial block that sits on the southeast corner of Highway 21 and King Street, across from the Kwik-Way store. Measuring 8,500 square feet, it will be a passive park, boasting many flowers, shrubs and trees, including a large Colorado Spruce tree that will be lit up for the Christmas season. There will be benches, a fountain, chess/checker tables, and meandering pathways.

The name St. Andrews was chosen because that was the village’s name originally. The name was changed to Tiverton (after Tiverton, Scotland) when the post office came along, because there was already a St. Andrews post office.

At the Kincardine council meeting June 10, Huron Landscaping of Lucknow was awarded the contract to complete the park by July 22. The tender came in at $104,851 which was $7,411 over-budget. Recreation director Karen Kieffer said a credit of $1,000 can be applied because the holiday tree is a donation, leaving a shortfall of $6,411. That amount could be taken from the Ward 3 road reserve, she said.

Councillor Randy Roppel noted that the municipality heard earlier in the meeting that it was receiving $55,000 for upgrades to Sunset Drive in Ward 3 so that could go toward the park. However, council agreed that money is going into
the general fund and could be used for a road in Ward 3. Kieffer said the Ward 3 road reserve has a balance of $52,000.

"No problem then," said Roppel. "Use that reserve to pay for the park."

Council agreed.
