Sponsoring the Tiverton Reunion parade's stainless steel water bottles are, back, Lloyd Hendry (L) of KenVel Farms, Donna Hendry of the Tiverton Reunion committee, Stuart and Nancy Alexander of The King's Peal, Audel Tuft of the Tiverton Agricultural Society, Marie Wilson of NWMO, Rosemarie Young of the parade committee; and front, Alex Convay (L) of KTTEGSP, Jen Stark of the reunion green team, and Olivia Convay of KTTEGSP.

The Tiverton Reunion Parade is going "green".

Stainless steel water bottles will be given to participants of the event, rather than using plastic recyclable water bottles or compostable cups and a water dispenser.

A suggestion by local environmentalist Carol Blake, the idea caught on with the parade committee which includes Rosemarie and Jim Young, Laurie and Jamie Convay, Nancy and Ken Craig and Anne and George McBride.

With sponsorship from several organizations, the committee is using the stainless steel bottles to keep parade participants hydrated for the one to one-and-a-half-hour walking route. The first 200 people to register for the parade on the morning of Aug. 1 will receive a free cleaned and filled stainless steel water bottle to keep as a reunion souvenir. The parade begins at Pine Tree Camping, west of the village, at noon (register by 10:30 a.m.), and will continue through to the Tiverton Sports Centre.

"The stainless steel water bottle solves the problem of recycled waste and the compostable waste which would have had to be managed after the event," said Laurie Convay. "This gives us a zero waste event, and the bottle is a memorable souvenir of the reunion for years to come. Plus, it is a good way to model habits and set precedence for events in the future."

The bottles were purchased through a local company, SkyTech. While the cost was significant, compared to other options, Convay said the stainless steel bottles will be in constant use, reducing waste everywhere in the municipality, the province, and beyond. "It is very exciting to be a part of this green initiative," she said. "Together, we can and will make a difference to educate and change the thinking of our past and future generations."

Sponsoring the project are the Tiverton Reunion Committee, $850; Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO), $800; Kincardine Township Tiverton Public Environmental Green School Project (KTTEGSP), $771.54; Tiverton Agricultural Society, $400; KenVel Farms of Tiverton, $200; The King's Pearl of Tiverton, $150.

As for the reunion parade, organizers are hoping to see some interesting family and corporate floats to mix with the multicultural bands that will be performing.
