Dear Councillor Randy Roppel,

I was very disappointed with your comments and lack of support for all the community organizations including your own public works committee that is making a huge effort in waste diversion for the Municipality of Kincardine. Each group is a major benefit to our municipality in getting the message across to send less to the landfills.

I would like to remind you of some very successful events/programs put on by committed municipal citizens:

Kincardine promoted a Green Reunion and separated all the waste from the entire celebration, creating a near-zero waste event.

Bruce Power puts on an incredible BBQ every year and is accountable for separation/collection of all the waste produced.

The Kincardine Agriculture Society put on a 3R’s Fall Fair this year. Tiverton Reunion’s team focused on also being environmentally-conscious.

Tiverton Communities in Bloom won five blooms and the Environmental Measure Awards for your village.

Our local grocery stores are presently promoting the use of reusable bags and local businesses and corporations use biodegradable bags instead of plastic.

The young families are the ones that are making a difference; this is the fifth year for the “Clean Sweep March” and it is a vital program which brings environmental awareness to our community on why we need to send less to the landfill and participants see first hand how our Waste Recycling Centre is managed.

The schools are active in creating environmental initiatives in each school and they need to be commended for their efforts in reaching out to each school family. These initiatives include the Green Cone Digester and Environmental Education Bookmark Series.

Those affected are not the young or the low-income family; the ones affected are those who choose not to make an environmental commitment or hold themselves accountable for the waste they produce. Shame on you for labelling residents of our municipality or even suggesting that people would drop their garbage in our beautiful country bushes and ditches! We will all suffer and pay if we do not do our part to make our new Recycling Centre last longer.

Councillor Roppel, change is inevitable, and it is more effective to show support as our councillor and give positive comments of encouragement to the people who are trying to make a huge difference and setting an example in waste diversion!!!!!
