Gateway Signs for the Community Occupy the Counci

Saugeen Shores Town Council was asked to approve the new Gateway signs for Port Elgin and Southampton at Monday's meeting of council.

A series of community focus groups have met to offer input into the signage that will act as gateways to each community and many suggestions and recommendations have been put forward.

Corbin Design, the American company hired to create uniform signage throughout the country, asked that council approve the designs as presented.  Town staff recommended that the Southampton gateway sign be approved with conditions regarding colour but the Port Elgin sign was not approved.

Town staff has recommended that a 'final design committee' be struck with a mandate to "review the design beaing proposed for Port Elgin and to make a final decision".

Concillor Diane Huber, representing Southampton, pointed out that each sign will cost approximately $40,000-$50,000 each.  In addition she added that, "I thought we would receive the potential locations and photographic super-imposing signs in those locations to see what they would actually look like.

I'm surprised we don't have that information.  I think the lighthouse idea for the sign is great but the colour, white with white, given our winters and snow background, the sign will not show up at all.  I though we were told there would be colour added."

Mike Myatt, Director of Community Services, who has been working with Bruce County Tourism on the signage project, also expressed his disappointment.  "I too was disappointed with the white on white for Southamp;ton and I have found it very difficult working with Corbin to get any revisions and we would like to get this resolved by year-end."

Councillor Fred Shildroth, pointed out that, "The gateway signs are the most important aspect for those visiting our community.  We need a clear timeline and also need to know who is going to make the final decision."

"I am concerned about branding for Port Elgin," said Councillor Victoria Serda.  "Southampton has its own sense of place and has been able to carry it through."

Town Council approved Corbin Design's proposal for the Southampton Gateway Sign, dependent on suggested changes to colour, in addition to downtown/directional signage and, further, that another committee will be established to finalize the Port Elgin Gateway Sign Design.
