_______ To keep the EAST LILIES flowering longer, remove the (yellow) stamens. THE MAN IN THE TILLEY HAT ___________ THE MAN IN THE TILLEY HAT says: That if you can get to those ORNAMENTAL GRASSES that are still showing with a few "feathers" at the top, and all dried up, now is a good time to cut back as low as one can. Then if we get very dry weather this Spring, make sure the Miscanthus are watered well. I got started on cutting back ours yesterday, and thought that maybe a gardening tip would be interesting to folks. Brian __________________ __________________ Joanne's Garden
Patio Since the Saugeen area is full of award winning gardens we feature means and methods of cultivating northern gardens. Even though we're about to begin a long winter, most gardeners are still combing the pages of the many garden magazines that fill the shelves. Planning is a big part of gardening, or should be. Dreaming of beds of colour and the rich scent of flowers, such as hyacinth, lead the gardener through the dark wintry days with a hope of an early spring. There is no doubt that cottage country gardens present their own particular challenges. Strong winds off a lake or rains that sweep across in sheets can present any bloom with a perplexing way to adapt and survive. While the challenges are there so, too, are the rewards. Living near a lake can provide that much needed moisture- laden air that encourages plants. Even the soil can be somewhat clay, in other pockets, there are the rich glacial deposits of fertile black earth that is every gardener's delight. When Joanne Charlebois of Southampton began her garden reformation, weeds were the name of the day. Upon purchasing the cottage that had been turned into a home, the beds were filled with sedum and mums interspersed with wild growth that threatened to strangle what beauty there was. Not one to give up however, Joanne and her husband, Brian, began to design a yard that would suit their lifestyle. Working in Toronto until their retirement, the couple needed plants that would require little maintenance during those days when they were unable to travel to their summer residence. While many people prefer the privacy of a back yard, the Charlebois enjoy sitting on their front flagstone patio with its portable firepit and they have discovered that ornamental grasses play a key role in providing the privacy they still want. Today, lush planters filled with bucopa and the ever-popular, low- maintenance 'wave' petunia, act as a divider between the driveway and backyard and raised flower beds are filled with perennials. Scotch moss lines the walkway and purple coneflower (echinacea) provide colour throughout the summer while attracting the butterflies that Joanne finds so appealing. In the back beds, there are herbs that are used throughout the summer months by both Joanne and her neighbour Christine Champion. Gladiola and sunflowers create a splash of colour and, for the observant, there are pieces of garden art peeking out between the plants. "I think the key to a cottage garden," says Joanne, "particularly if you're not there to keep an eye on things, is to keep it low maintenance and to also hire a gardener who knows what they are doing and who can look after things until you can get back to your plants."
