Firefighter caught in back draft of mandatory retirement

 By Liz Dadson

A new bylaw to regulate the Kincardine Fire Department would prematurely end the career of one of its firefighters ... and that doesn't sit well with many on Kincardine council.

At the Oct. 15 meeting, Councillor Kenneth Craig said he understood that the new regulations would not impact any of the firefighters.  However, he has since learned that one firefighter will be affected immediately by the mandatory retirement age of 65. "Can we not grandfather this bylaw?" he asked.

Administrative Fire Chief, Jamie MacKinnon, said,  "The new bylaw does not extend anyone past the age of 65."

Councillor Marsha Leggett, Chairperson of the Emergency Services Committee, said the firefighter affected by this bylaw approached her and said he wanted to continue as a radio operator until he had achieved his 40-year pin. "I  told him to come to council," she said.

"I was also under the impression that this bylaw would not affect any firefighters," said Councillor Guy Anderson.

Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), John deRosenroll, said the individual did come into the office and was told to put his request in writing for an exemption to the bylaw and that it would go to the emergency services committee for discussion, with a recommendation to council.

Councillor Randy Roppel suggested the bylaw be deferred until after the emergency services meeting, so council can make a proper decision.

Third reading of the bylaw was deferred.
