Fire Boards Work out Agreements

For more than 30 years, Paisley and District Fire Department has provided fire protection services for the former Township of Saugeen (now Town of Saugeen Shores) closest to the Paisley Fire Station.

Saugeen Shores informed the fire board in October, 2007 that instead of being part owner of the Paisley Department, it will now purchase a fire protection agreement.  An appraisal during 2008 determined that the Saugeen Shores' share of current assets in the Paisley Department is 75% of $18,399 , or $13,799, is payable to Saugeen Shores with the termination of the Joint Fire Department ownership. It has been agreed that the funds will be held without interest as a credit against future fire protection services.

The retainer fee for the agreement will be $4,000 per year, adjusted annually by the Ontario Consumer Price Index. In addition, responses will be billed to Saugeen Shores according to the rates in effect at the time of each response according to rates established by Ministry of Transportation.

The recommendation was also made that the Saugeen Shores Fire Chief should meet with the Paisley and Tara Chiefs to discuss the possibility of Saugeen Shores providing fire services closer to its territory/area.

Vice Deputy Mayor, Doug Gowanlock also proposed that Saugeen Shores, instead of Tara, provide fire protection for the community of Burgoyne. "Burgoyne is closer to Saugeen Shores and it would mean lower insurance rates. I believe the new Fire Chief in South Bruce also wants to investigate First Nations in this respect. Saugeen Shores should be looking at four areas because we are dealing with fire boards and as many as four different councils."

It is expected that the proposed agreement will have little financial impact on the Saugeen Shore Fire Department operating budget and is anticipated that the future cost of the agreement should be less than $6,000 annually. The number of responses however, will have a direct bearing on annual costs.
