Internet and Technology

According to Mike Andrews, President and CEO of Bruce Telecom, the company is continuing with its fibre optic expansion.

"We are going ahead with more fibre over the next few months and years," says Andrews, "but for now we are focusing on
connecting our existing subscribers to the fibre optic system that was recently installed throughout Southampton and other areas."

Andrews says that the company has been installing fibre optics all along in new subdivisions that open within the areas serviced by Bruce Telecom. "There is no doubt that it is the preferred medium," he said, "but there are also major developments being made to use the existing copper network for high-definition television and increased bandwidth for the internet. Our long-term goal however, is to deploy fibre everywhere that we service."

When asked about the recent fibre optics installation in the area by the Nova Scotia based Eastlink, Andrews says that they (Bruce Telecom) obviously would have preferred that they hadn't come into the area, but he also realizes that it is a very competitive market.

"We are definitely locally based and well known," added Andrews, "and we hope that our customers appreciate that their local company provides the personal service that larger outside companies don't.
