For more than 50 years and three
generations later, Eagleson's Funeral Home has been part of the
community in Southampton.
Chad Eagleson and his wife, Jodi, the third generation, have now
purchased the Funeral Home from Chad's parents, Frank and Doris
Eagleson.
Chad Eagleson obtained his Funeral Director's License in 2001 and
began working with Haycock-Cavanagh Funeral Home in Wallaceburg,
Ontario. In 2002, he moved to Toronto to take a position with Turner
& Porter Funeral Directors Ltd. to broaden his experience in the
field and, then in 2005, the young couple moved to Southampton where
Chad Eagleson realized his dream to join the family's funeral
services.
The family carries on a long tradition in Southampton. The senior
Gordon Eagleson and his wife Margaret opened Eagleson Furniture and
Funeral Services in May, 1953, after purchasing the Herbert Harmer
Furniture and Undertaking business that had been established in 1886
by the Harmer family.
Historically, many furniture stores in Ontario also provided funeral
services because they not only made furniture but also caskets. Many
furniture builders, in fact, also learned embalming techniques. When
Gordon and Margaret Eagleson took over the Harmer business, they
held visitations and funeral services in the living room of their
small apartment next door to the furniture store on High Street.
In 1955, the family purchased the Spruce Lawn Guest Home on
Palmerston Street and opened the first real funeral home for
Southampton. After many additions and renovations, the Eagleson
Funeral Home, Chapel and Family Centre has become recognized as one
of the most thought-out, full-service facilities in the Bruce Grey
region.

A family tradition, the entire
Eagleson family is "..... dedicated to creating personal and meaningful
services for families. Don't forget that many of these families are our
friends and neighbours and we want to help them through the difficult
time of the loss of a loved one in any way we can."
"Over the years," says Frank Eagleson, "we've seen dramatic changes in
the way people plan funerals. People are taking their own funerals into
their own hands, relieving their families of the task. Also, funerals
have become mroe of a celebration of life. We encourage families to
bring in special mementos of a loved one ... whatever the deceased was
interested in should be a meaningful part of the celebration."
Chad and Jodi Eagleson are excited at taking over the family business.
"We feel so privileged to be able to continue this family tradition in
Southampton," says the young couple. Now with seven-month old son Hudsen,
they are looking forward to continuing the long tradition of Eagleson
Funeral Home.
