Design Guidelines for the Highway 21 corridor were the topic of a full-day workshop for Saugeen Shores residents on Wednesday June 24th. The Guidelines are being prepared to describe a community vision for new and redevelopment along the corridor that can be used to evaluate and guide public and private projects in the town. Central to the vision of these guidelines is the recognition that waterfront proximity is a key asset in Saugeen Shores, and that this waterfront is used and appreciated in slightly different ways, with Port Elgin’s family-friendly/resort character and Southampton’s more historical maritime character. “Tying the highway corridor to the waterfront came out very strongly at last year’s workshop,” said Jack Van Dorp, a Planner for the County of Bruce. “Water is key to the identity of Saugeen Shores, but you would hardly know it if you were driving along the highway.”

The guidelines are intended to espouse and build upon the community vision to create a more unique, intimate, and inviting community in Saugeen Shores-but not to prescribe details of development. “Its about creating inspiration” said Kara Van Myall, the team leader for the project.

Workshop participants were divided into six tables, each representing a specific area along the corridor in Port Elgin or Southampton. Representatives from the Bruce County Planning Department led a series of short presentations on elements of the design guidelines, including buildings, ways to get around town, parks and open space, the environment, and landmarks and edges. Each presentation set the stage for discussion among the participants about how these elements could be applied to the specific districts. “This workshop is really about starting to drill down to the specifics of how the high-level vision and general guidelines start to get implemented on the ground.” Said Van Myall.

In the next stage of this project, planners will work with the information from the workshop to craft design guidelines that are specific to each district area of the town. Public contributions to the project at this stage are still welcome; information is available at
