The December Full Moon occurs at the start of the Month...thus giving us a chance of "A BLUE MOON" i.e. two full moons in a month.

The second day, at the second hour and the thirtieth minute is THE BIG WINTER MOON. (Cree).
Then the thirty-first day at the 14th hour and 13th minute we see the LONG NIGHT MOON.
Also on the 31st, Atlantic Canada has an "extra treat" with a partial lunar eclipse - visible in those parts at moon-rise.

The WINTER SOLSTICE commences Eastern Time at 12.49 on December 21 or 17.47 UTC.

December brings a warning of "Beware the POGONIP" .

Pogonip is a meteorological term used to describe an uncommon occurrence - FROZEN FOG. The word is coined from Native Americans to describe fine ice needles that occur in mountain valleys of Western United States and Canada. (17 December)

  • According to their tradition the fog is injurious to the lungs.
  • Islamic New year starts on the 18th
  • Christmas is as usual the 25th of the month and signifies the FIRST DAY of Christmas, with the Christmas season ending on the TWELFTH NIGHT which is the 5th of January
  • The first day of KWANZAA is on the 26th, - also BOXING DAY.
