Davidson Centre addition delayed 10 weeks

Work continues on the addition to the Davidson Centre after delays have put construction back about 10 weeks

The completion date for the Davidson Centre addition is now estimated at March 13, 2009, 10 weeks behind schedule.

That was the message to Kincardine council Wednesday night (Nov. 12) from Brian Snyder of the Ventin Group which is overseeing the project.

"The main reason for the delay is that the steel supplier went bankrupt," said Snyder. The contractor has found a new supplier but that problem pushed back the schedule a bit.

"In addition, there were changes to the scope of the work and the discovery of a layer of topsoil below the floor that had to be removed and replaced with fill," Snyder said. "That would have cost an extra $16,000, but the contractor has agreed to reduce it to an additional $12,000."

The March 13 completion date is based on an extra three weeks for the foundation, five extra weeks for the steel, and two weeks due to bad weather, explained Snyder.

"Was the bankruptcy of the steel supplier a surprise?" asked councillor Randy Roppel. "Yes, everybody was surprised," said Snyder. "The contractor was checking on the delivery of the steel and found out the company was in receivership. Steel prices fluctuate quickly; that's another factor that affects the construction industry. Once the steel arrives and they get the roof on, that'll be a relief."

The $2-million addition will be over 10,000 square feet in size and will hold new meeting rooms and a fitness centre. It is being built to the south of the existing building.
