In
only two weeks, former Saugeen Shores Town Councillor, Jane
Barber, will be living in not only a new town but in a new
Province.
Barber is about to head west to Grand Cache, Alberta. The town,
with a population of 4,000, is approximately two hours north of
Jasper. It's main industry is the production of coal but it also
borders a national park and is looking at developing a tourism
industry.
"I'm taking the position of Tourism and Marketing Director,"
said Barber. "I found the position accidentally on the internet
and, when I read the qualifications, realized that I had them
all. I submitted my resume, had an interview and got the job.
Let's just say they made an offer that I couldn't refuse!" she
laughs. (next column)

One of Barber's first tasks will be to organize the
town's participation in the Sportsmen's Show held in Edmonton. The Show
is the second largest, after Toronto's Sportsmen's Show, and Barber will
be responsible for the Grand Cache exhibit. "It's a big
step but I'm excited about it," Barber says. "I know it will probably be
difficult at first but since my business aspirations here didn't turn
out quite as I planned, I've made the decision to take this job. It
offers me so much in respect to benefits, a relocation fee and housing,
not mention salary, that I simply did not want to turn it down."
Barber was halfway through her term on Saugeen Shores Council when she
officially left at the Council's last meeting on February 9th.
Council will now decide on its next course of action to either replace
Barber or continue on with the status quo.
