Phase one of Copway Trail off Tyendanaga Drive
Phase one of the Copway expansion of the Rail Trail has been finished
with plans for completion of the entire loop in the works.
Mike Myatt, Director of Community Services, explains that, "The Copway
Trail expansion will be part of the Rail Trail loop. It starts at
Tyendanaga Drive behind Chippewa Golf and Country Club and will
eventually link up to a public access to the beach."
Myatt pointed out that the concept is to bring what has been an informal
path up to standard for walking, jogging, cycling and even those with
strollers. "The path has been there for a long time and all we are
doing is bringing it up to an acceptable standard for everyone."

A natural part of the trail
Although there are some residents who object to the
expansion and completion of the trail for several reasons, others see it
as a welcome addition to the community and public access to the beach
area.
"The work has been planned for completion in 2009," says Myatt.
"Although there have been arguments against it, there have also been
many suggestions that we are adopting, such as changing the design to a
winding trail instead of a straight one, the addition of garbage
receptacles and not creating a parking lot area. We are trying to
create a recreational trail that everyone can enjoy and that will help
complete the entire loop of the Rail Trail system."
