Once again the community is being asked to step up to the plate in support of local Para-Olympian wheelchair racer, Josh Cassidy.

A benefit dinner last week held by the Southampton Rotary Club raised more than $2,400 to go toward a new chair for Cassidy and the Port Elgin Rotary Club has contributed an additional $1,500. Cassidy, who is ranked 1st in Canada in his sport, said each donation he receives will help him cover the cost to compete on the world circuit, which is about $40,000 each year.

Cassidy is one of only a handful of Olympic and Paralympic athletes to be selected to appear on General Mills' Cheerios boxes as part of a 'support-our-athletes' campaign. The special edition Gold Box Cheerios are available for purchase across the country with a unique PIN code for the Aspiring Olympians and Para-Olympians printed inside each commemorative box.

By collecting and submitting the PIN codes at the special website:

www.everydaycelebrations.ca/aspiringolympians  General Mills has committed to providing each athlete with a minimum of $5,000 to a maximum of $25,000. The program was launched in April to help provide the funding needed to offset the high costs of equipment, travel and other expenses incurred during training and all monies raised go directly to the athletes themselves.

On Saturday, the community of Saugeen Shores is invited to come out from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to Legault's Independent in Port Elgin where Cassidy will be autographing the cereal boxes that have his photo on them. From each box purchased, an additional $3.00 will be donated to him.
