Community Fund

Town Council

(continued)

John Miller, Chair of the Saugeen Shores Community Fund Association presented the group's annual update to Council at their Monday night meeting.

As a community fund, the association works with the Grey Bruce Community Fund as part of Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) focusing on helping community organizations.

Founded in 1992, there are now 21 community foundations raising monies that stay within the communities.

"We were very fortunate this past year to receive a $1million donation from the McKay family. There is no doubt that the global economy is hurting everyone's investments and we are no exception although we are faring slightly better than most."

Councillor Luke Charbonneau asked Miller whether the principal of the fund was at risk. Miller answered that because the monies are invested, there is always a risk but that they were "... being handled by the conservative firm of Jarislowki Fraser Investments." He went on to say that the fund had lost 11 per cent this past year and that there was only a 4 per cent growth over the past five years.

Miller said that the fund is nearing $30,000 and that both the Port Elgin Cenotaph Endowment fund and the Marine Heritage fund were now available to receive donations/grants. "This is one of the few community funds that will still be taking applications for grants this year and they should be submitted by March 31st."

Miller, on behalf of the Fund also requested that Council once again consider support for the group in the amount of $5,000 as it has in the past.

As Chair, Miller also outlined several activities planned for 2009, i8ncluding the annual Triple Play Golf Tournament on June 25th, the 3rd annual Mayor's Gala on New Year's and an environmental forum to be held at the CAW in Port Elgin in October.

Each community foundation is an autonomous or independent, volunteer-driven, charitable organization, whose focus is to strengthen the community by facilitating philanthropy, partnering with donors to build permanent endowments and other funds, from which they support charitable community projects through grants and by providing leadership on issues of broad community concern
