Business Improvement Committee views a decorative pole first-hand

Dave Metcalf, an expert on decorative pole lighting

During each of its meetings, the Community Improvement Committee (CIC) of Saugeen Shores, discusses issues, such as parking, aesthetics, horticulture, building facades and others, that relate to the overall improvement of Port Elgin's downtown core.

The Committee, chaired by Town Councillor, Luke Charbonneau, is endeavouring to create a focused approach for the beautification of the downtown core in order to attract both tourists and local residents.

Tuesday (Apr.25), the group met to discuss lighting and listen to a presentation by Dave Metcalf of Sky Cast Decorative Poles, brought in by Bill Jones head of the Town's Public Works Department. Metcalf illustrated the various types of decorative lighting that are available and the intricacies involved in deciding what type of lighting should be applied. Everything from globe size to pole colour and height have to be weighed.

Sky Cast, a Canadian Company, has provided decorative lighting in a wide variety of locations ranging from complete housing subdivisions and villages, such as Port Stanley, to towns, such as Ingersoll, Simcoe and Lasalle, and cities, such as Las Vegas.

"Each application is different," explained Metcalf. "We work with individual groups and architects and also maintain a high environmental standard when it comes to things like the Dark Sky initiative." Metcalf took the Committee outside to see an actual light pole and standard that he had brought as a demonstration.

"I highly recommend that whatever the town decides, every contingency be looked at at the time of pole manufacturing when it's easier to install everything, such as power outlets, plant and banner hanging capability, etc. You may not think you need something but it is far simpler to do it initially than try to upgrade once the poles are installed."

After much discussion and debate, the Committee made the motion to 'develop a lighting plan for the CIC area in partnership with the Business Improvement Association (BIA)', a group that initiated and installed the existing lighting.
