Chippewa Golf Pro, John Schmidt congratulates Senior Men's Champ, Frank Yakabuski

The Senior Mens' Club Championship was held at Chippewa Golf and Country Club last week.  The course was in great condition, the weather was warm and sweaty, and conditions were perfect for some great scoring.  Some of our great senior players were entered, hoping to claim the title of Senior Club Champion - guys like Ron Caudle, who took a serious run at the Mens' Club Championship a couple of weeks ago, Keith Stein, who still has a great game in his bag, Bruce Towner, who hits the ball a ton, Derryl Urstadt whose swing reminds you of Freddy Couples, Brian MacLean, who is always a threat, and Frank Yakabuski, long time member who just became eligible to play in the event this year.

On the first day of play, in the A-flight, Frank Yakabuski gave notice to the field that he was here to play, as he shot an even par round of 72 to take the first day lead.  Bruce Towner was only 2 strokes off the pace with a 74, Mike Pitzen was in third place all alone with a 78, followed by Derryl Urstadt and Bill Western, both with 79.

In the B-flight, Mike Cleary shot 82 to take the lead after the first round of play, with Bill Christie only 3 strokes behind.  Dennis Sisko and Bill Lazenby carded scores of 88, while Lorne Lazenby was one stroke back with an 89.  In the C-flight, Jim Connelly and John Upper both shot 92 to be tied for the lead after the first day while Bill Thomson was one stroke back, with a 93.  Still in the hunt and only 2 strokes back was Don White with a 94.

In the D-flight, on day one, Bob Boyd, Joe Chiappetta and Watt Rodgers were tied for the lead with scores of 96 but Doug Oatman and Dennis Johnston were only two strokes back with scores of 98.  On the second day of play, Rodgers had to pull out during the round, opening the door for some others to make their charge.  Chiappetta played a great round on the second day, scoring 98 to take the lead into the clubhouse.  But Johnston, who was two strokes back of Chiappetta, had a great front nine of 42, and continued his good play into the back nine to shoot a 96 and tie Chiappetta for the lead, both with two-day totals of 194.

A playoff was required to break the tie, and after the dust had settled on the first hole of sudden death, Chiappetta was victorious and is the D-flight Champion.  Bob Boyd, who shot 104 on the second day was the second low gross winner in the D-flight, while Dennis Johnston won first low net followed by Art Eby, who took second low net.  Doug Oatman, who shot 101 on the second day, was declared the overall Low Net Champion for the tournament with a two-day net score of 127.

In the C-flight, Upper and Thomson battled it out, keeping within one stroke of each other until the latter holes of the back nine.  Thomson had some trouble on holes 16 and 17, carding 8 on each hole allowing Upper to gain 5 strokes on those two holes.  Upper went on to shoot 89 on the second day was was the C-flight Champion with a two-day total of 181.  Thomson was the second low gross winner with a two-day total of 184.  Jim Connelly shot 97 on the second day of play to win first low net in the C-flight with a two-day net score of 139.  Don Foell won second low net with a two-day net score of 142.

In the B-flight, Cleary continued his great play, scoring 84 on the second day of play to easily win the B-flight Champion title with a two-day total of 166.  Lorne Lazenby shot 87 on the second day of play and won second low gross with a two-day total of 176.  Dennis Sisko had a great second round of 83 to win first low net in the flight with a two-day net total of 133, while Don Hill took second low net with a two-day net total of 140.

In the A-flight, Yakabuski turned up the heat when he birdied the first two holes, and suddenly, his closest competitor, Bruce Towner was four strokes behind.  Towner said that he played a good game, but every time he scored a birdie, Yakabuski did too.  It became impossible to catch Yakabuski, as he went on to shoot 77 on the second day, for a two-day total of 149. more than enough to win the Senior Club Champion title.  Congratulations to Frank.  Bruce Towner won first low gross in the
A-flight, with a two-day total of 154, followed by Derryl Urstadt with a two-day total of 159.  Mike Pitzen shot 85 on the second day and claimed the first low net champion title with a two-day net score of 137.  Bill Western won second low net with a two-day net score of 139.
