The first weekend in July throughout Bruce County, and most of
Ontario, is the real beginning of summer that begins with a round of
numerous events, some of which are annual and some of which are new.
This year, the 'Year of the Lighthouse', celebrates the lighthouses
of the Great Lakes and, in Southampton, where the restored Imperial
lighthouse Chantry Island has played a key role in tourism
development, the activities have been and will continue to be
numerous throughout the remainder of the year.
One of the most popular events during that first weekend in July was
a competition between long-standing rivalry groups, the Chantry
Island
Cham-Bettes and the Propeller Club. Both groups are made up of
community volunteers who fund-raise for a variety of causes
including Chantry Island.
Competition between the two groups began two years ago with a tug
'o' war using a ship's anchor chain. The Propeller Club won that
competition handily with the men of the group defeating the
all-women Cham-Bettes. This year however, the Cham-Bettes chose the
battleground and decided to include more unusual types of
competition that included "body floss", "burst the balloon" and
"squeeze the sponge".
The Cham-Bettes won this year's competition hands down.
