Hundreds of people, dressed in red and white, marched down Harbour Street, Kincardine, to the big flag for the Canada Day celebration Wednesday.

The Kincardine Scottish Pipe Band led the parade, followed by Royal Canadian Legion members, Air Cadets and Kincardine Scouting.

Kincardine mayor Larry Kraemer welcomed everyone and wished them all a Happy Canada Day, celebrating the 142nd birthday of our nation. He also read an article, written by an Australian dentist, that describes what a Canadian is.

Reading from a message sent by Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb, unable to attend the ceremony, Kraemer noted Lobb's sentiments: "We live in the best country in the world. We are home to enduring peace and prosperity. Despite all the global pressures and problems, we are proud of who we are and where we come from."
Winners of the Grades 4-8 Legion poetry contest were announced. Jason Dales, Grade 7, won first, with his poem, "Proud to be Canadian;" Steve Travale, Grade 5, was second, with his alphabetical poem about Kincardine; and honourable mention went to Fiona Robertson, Grade 6.

Carol Grozelle gave a history of Kincardine Scouting which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year.

Then the flag was raised, the balloons released and the crowd sang "O Canada."

Games and activities were held in MacPherson Park, including music by the Ten O'Clock Band, and a Reptilian Show.

The day's celebration ended with fireworks at dusk.
