Bruce County Archives at the Museum in Southampton had a very busy summer with 733 researchers using the Reading Room so far this year. It also had countless museum visitors swarming through its doors to receive a family tree to fill out. This is increasing awareness about the archives and increasing interest in family history.

In June, the Archives held its first annual cemetery bus trip travelling to five cemeteries. Watch for information about next year’s bus trip in future newsletters

The Archives also now has a new Reading Room Attendant. Deb Sturdevant joined in August and is working weekends while completing her Master of Library and Information Science at the University of Western Ontario.

Currently working with the Bruce County Historical Society on the Legion Photo Days project, Archives staff will visit five Bruce County Legions this fall to make images of Bruce County related military photos and paraphernalia to be preserved at the Bruce County Archives. Tara and Paisley were visited in October while Southampton (November 4), Chesley (November 18) and Port Elgin (December 2) will host photo days on the dates given, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Images will be uploaded to the http://military.brucemuseum.ca  website as well as being available for viewing in the Reading Room. This project is being completed with financial assistance from New Horizons for Seniors Program. The Archives was also able to purchase ten further Veteran’s Oral History Videos as well as support the Veterans Remember program through this project.

The Archives continues to update the Ontario Vital Statistics. Indexes and registrations for this year’s releases of Births (1912), Marriages (1927) and Deaths (1937) have been added to the collection and there are also new estate files from 1910 to 1914.

"We want to take this opportunity to recognize the unfailing support of our faithful volunteers who have assisted us with Reading Room coverage throughout the summer, and over the course of this fall," says Archivist Ann-Marie Collins. "Their generous contributions of time and talents are appreciated more than can be expressed."

Please note: Archives is moving to winter hours. The Reading Room (research) access will be five days a week – Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. Closed Sundays and Mondays until the end of March. Feel free to call if you have any questions, comments or suggestions (519) 797-2080 or 1-866-318-8889 ext 129 or visit:
