The contest is on to name the 14-foot-wide sidewalk on the west side of the reconstructed Huron Terrace bridge beside the Kincardine Lighthouse.

In committee-of-the-whole Wednesday night (Nov. 18), Steve Murray, economic development and tourism manager, explained that the Community, Heritage, Arts and Tourism (CHAT) committee came up with the idea in order to promote this new tourism feature in the municipality.

He said the wide sidewalk will become a favourite destination for locals and visitors, alike, as they take in a lovely sunset, listen to the Phantom Piper, or watch the activity in the harbour. "We would like to brand the lookout by giving it an historical name," said Murray.

One suggestion was "Paddy's Porch," in reference to Paddy Walker who was responsible for the river mouth being at its current location after he diverted the path of the river to go past his own tavern in a clever business move years ago, Murray said.

The contest will run for a few weeks and the public can submit names either via the municipal website or in person at the municipal office. The CHAT committee will then bring a recommendation to council. The cost to run the contest is about $200, said Murray.

Council approved the idea. And mayor Larry Kraemer noted that the Huron Terrace bridge is expected to open to traffic in a week or two.
