As expected, WalMart will not be the only kid on the block ... or
parking lot.
The new Smart Centres Shopping Development, or WalMart as it's known in
Saugeen Shores, will soon have new neighbours.
At its Monday night meeting, Saugeen Shores Town Council authorized
staff to go ahead with the processing of a Canadian Tire Site Plan
Agreement which, in essence, approves a new store of almost 53,000
square feet. The building will also house a new Mark's Work Wearhouse
that will occupy 5,000 square feet.
The Canadian Tire Store will include six service centre bays in addition
to an enclosed permanent garden centre with an outside garden centre. On
entering the entrance to the development site, Canadian Tire will be
located immediately to the south (on the right) with the end of the
garden centre facing the road. It's anticipated that the configuration
will allow for a full visible view of Wal Mart from the highway.
The north side of the entrance (left) and immediately in front will be
paved and serve as parking for the combined Canadian Tire and Mark's
Work Wearhouse store and WalMart. Since all available land is required
for parking, no further development can take place ... based on current
planning.

"There has been a rumour," said Councillor Fred
Shildroth, "that there will also be a gas bar at the new Canadian Tire
location. Is this true?"
Town Clerk, Linda White said that a gas bar would have to be applied for
and a re-zoning change approved.
Councillor Victoria Serda enquired about pedestrian and cyclist access.
Mayor Mike Smith said that access was available from the Rail Trail and
Clerk, Linda White, said that a sidewalk was being installed and it was
confirmed that scooter parking had been planned for in front of Wal
Mart.
"We have been talking about 'dark sky' issues," said Councillor Luke
Charbonneau, "so what can be done about lighting here?" "We will go back
to the applicant about lighting," said Clerk White, "and bring their
reponse back to Council on December 8th.
Smart Centres is now working toward a severance of the Canadian Tire
site from the Wal Mart site and, once the severance is finalized and
registered, Canadian Tire will purchase the property.
