Bert DeGraaf repairs a mural

Bert DeGraaf

Lambertus (Bert) DeGraaf of Kincardine works at restoring the mural on the north side of Harbour Street on the building that used to house the Nine Waves store.

He says the wall on the south side of Harbour Street would have been a better choice for a mural because, being brick, it would not wear off so quickly and is not in the direct sun. "The mural, painted years ago, was fixed in 2007," says DeGraaf, "and requires fixing again, just two years later." His job would be easier, he added, if the base surface of the mural had been prepared properly and if he had an original photo of the mural to work from.

An artist, DeGraaf hopes to encourage local municipalities to have smaller, more affordable murals painted throughout the area. For more information about murals in Ontario, check the website, www.muralroutes.com .
