Avoid Phishing Expeditions

The internet term Phishing has come into our vocabulary and even into spell checkers.

What is Phishing?

The term alludes to a program, usually an email mass mailing that asks you to do something urgent.  It works like this:

  1. A mass email is sent out and you receive it.  The email is from a prominent company that you may recognize.  It could be from PayPal, your credit card company or even a public utility.
  2. The email will look valid.  It will have the right logo and colour scheme.  Usually it will ask you to click on a link that looks valid.
  3. If you click on the link, you may be asked to update information for your existing account.  For example, it could say that due to recent security requirements we want to ask you a few questions.  There will be a login for you to start your way along to being 'phished'.  Everything will look ok, but by the time your done, they have your account information.

What can you do?

Just never pay attention to these Phishing Emails.  Legitimate companies don't send out emails  that request you to go to a site via an embedded link.  Let me show  you how easy it is.  I'll put a link in below in blue that seems like it will send you to Google, but really sends you to our Canadian Community News.  The fake link looks like Google..  Go ahead click on it.  It's really ok  It will send you to a new window that you can hit the back button to return here.
