Artist and Grandmother
Donates Painting
![]() Linda Doran Artist and new grandmother, Linda Doran of Southampton, recently completed a painting in the unique style that has earned her awards. A retired teacher, who also once worked in a medical lab, Doran only began painting seriously in the past few years. "I failed oil painting 101," she laughs, "but I found that I really enjoyed working with acrylics."
Grandmothers of Canada |
(continued) Doran donated her recent painting, titled 'Grandmothers of Canada Helping Grandmothers of Africa', to the Saugeen Grannies for auction. All proceeds from the painting will go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation and his 'Grandmothers Against Poverty and Aids" (GAPA) campaign. The campaign was begun in an effort to help those grandmothers in Africa who are now raising their grandchildren orphaned as a result of the aids epidemic. GAPA, with support from the Stephen Lewis Foundation, will continue to provide services through community awareness, educational workshops, support groups and financial assistance. It also funds a bursary for 100 pre-school children so that their caregiver grandmothers can work to earn a wage. GAPA is also training 80 grandmothers in business to provide them with skills that will enhance their own co-operatives to become more profitable. There has been phenomenal success in the grandmother-to-grandmother (and great-grandmother) initiative and many have been helped in their efforts to support their families despite the devastation caused by HIV. Doran's painting is available for viewing at the Southampton Art Gallery or: www.owensoundkijiji.ca where the starting bid for the original work is $400. For more information, call 519-797-3471
