Her cousin next door, the Art Gallery, has also seen extensive changes over the past two months. "We knew it was a risk to close the gallery for two months," says Board member, Gordon Boyd, "but we wanted to undertake a total refresh and to do it properly we had to completely close. We think the results are definitely worth it."
A New Look On the lower level, two new rooms have been added and the space has been opened up and painted a light colour making the entire area feel more spacious. The Lakeshore Artists also have their own room in the facility. The main level has also been completely redone, including, the installation of new front windows with UV protection to enable paintings to be hung as an attraction for passers-by. With the first two floors complete, the upper level will also soon be getting a new coat of fresh paint. |
(continued) Over the next year, more changes are anticipated in the structuring of the gallery operation, with the addition of two new board members bringing the complement to nine. "The board has been very supportive of what we are trying to do," says Gallery Manager, Aly Boltman. "We now have a new computer system and the staff have new responsibilities with a view to becoming more self-reliant." Beginning this year, there will also be more programs of a different nature. In March, the Art School and Gallery are offering a special children's art and theatre program over the school March break period. It is the first time this particular program, run by local artist, Tanya Weichel and theatre producer, Carol Vaughn, has been offered but they hope to make it an annual event. "We will also be offering 'Up Your Alley' on June 7th as part of Heritage Canada's 'Celebrate the Arts' weekend," says Gallery Manager, Aly Boltman. "It will be a chance for people to see artists at work outside on the patio area between the Art School and Gallery. Then, in conjunction with the 150th Anniversary of Southampton, we will be featuring the Free-Sharing Art Wall. People can buy a small canvas and paint their own personal view of Southampton. The top five will then be auctioned off as a fundraiser."
Main Feature Room "The overall work that's been done is fabulous," said Mayor Mike Smith, as he toured both the Art School and Gallery. "When you think that most of it has been done through volunteers, it's even more incredible. Without a doubt they're an asset to our entire community."
