Anglican Parish Celebrates...

WE’RE 150 YEARS OLD

On Valentines Day the Anglican Parish of Saugeen Shores held an old fashioned box social at St. Johns Church as part of its 150th Anniversary celebration. Pictured holding their decorated box lunches are a number of the parishioners who participated in this anniversary event. The box lunches were auctioned off in the Parish Hall.

Parish Halls have always been the centre of social activities in Anglican churches. The construction of the Parish Hall at St. Paul’s in Southampton was begun in 1910 under the supervision of Mr. Brownlee.

It was far enough advanced to be formally opened for Sunday School and church meetings on September 18th. Previous to the completion of the Parish Hall, Sunday School was conducted in the church, primarily by the clergy and their wives.  After 1910 the lay people stepped in, molding, teaching and guiding our young people.

Today the Parish Halls at St. Paul’s and St. John’s host marmalade bees, card parties, pancake suppers, fish fries, community suppers and many other activities.
