Isabel
Huggan, winner of the Charles Taylor Award for Literary Non-fiction,
will read from her books "Belonging: Home Away from Home" and "You Never
Know" at Tolmie Memorial Presbyterian Church in Port Elgin on Saturday
afternoon, July 26. She will also speak of her experiences as a world
traveler and writer of both fiction and non-fiction.
Huggan, who grew up in Elmira, settled
permanently in southern France after living on
several continents. "Belonging" has been
described as part memoir, part travelogue, part
fiction, for it includes her personal experiences in places as
well as three short stories. In
2004, "Belonging" received the prestigious
Charles Taylor Award. The jury's citation
mentioned "her openness to people and new
experiences" expressed in "elegant narrative and
illustrated by her intimate prose and sharp insights."
"You Never Know" includes twelve short stories
set in Canada, France, Kenya and Scotland. These
tales have been described as "graceful, powerful,
funny and touching."
As a child with ancestral roots in Bruce County,
she often travelled with family to the Lake Huron
shore. In accepting the invitation to read and
speak in Port Elgin, she wrote, "For me, spending
time on Lake Huron is always such a treat, and I
am thrilled to have this occasion to do so." (next column)
