Fairy Lake in Southampton is about to get a start on a much-need
facelift.
The Lake, located in the centre of town immediately behind the Bruce
County Museum and Cultural Centre, is viewed as a gem in the
community attracting hundreds of visitors each summer and, for
generations, children have explored round it shores.
Mike Myatt brought forward the recommendation to town council at its
Monday night meeting that the tender for a new retaining wall be
awarded to Shoreline Stone and Landscaping.
There were five bids received in the tendering process:
Shoreline Stone and Landscaping $ 48,216.00
Ackert Construction 49,950.00
Snyder Construction 59,985.00
Clearwater Direction Drilling 93,400.50
Vandriel Excavating $140,218.00
Shoreline will be using natural limestone blocks for the 97 metre
wall from the Bruce Peninsula that will be aesthetically pleasing as
well as environmentally friendly allowing rainwater run-off.
It is anticipated the work will take three weeks and that during
construction, the level of the water in the lake will be lowered.
Completion date is October and Dave Burnside assured council that
the engineering department will be monitoring the project. He
explained that a permit had also be submitted to the Saugeen Valley
Conservation Authority (SVCA). The wall be phase 1 of Fairy Lake
improvements with a new band shell and major landscaping expected in
continuing phases. (next column)
