A 3% wage increase was approved for Town Council on Monday night.

The increase is tied to the approved increase for non-union, permanent part-time town employees.

Both Councillors Diane Huber and Luke Charbonneau opposed the recommendation.

"We need to set an example for the community ... this is unnecessary at this time of economic downturn and should be put off for a year," said Charbonneau. "We should be showing some restraint and I am voting against this motion."

Councillor Thead Seaman pointed out that, "About 10 years ago, an ad hock committee set the rates as a percentage and, perhaps, it's time to appoint another committee to re-visit this."

"As councillors, we should not be voting on our own increases," added Councillor Victoria Serda. "I do think however that a wage should be paid to a politician that encourages those, even in lower incomes, to run for office and I don't think we should have a different increase from other municipal employees."

The motion was passed and the increase goes into effect January 1st, 2009.
