Do you agree with the trend toward
highway development vs. downtown?

In this survey there were an inordinate number of
multiple votes with a comment that indicated anger and/or frustration.
We counted only one vote whether No or Yes.
Multiple voting ....
hmmmm. You can express your opinion easily in the comments without
trying to influence the vote one way or another. Most people just
vote and don't comment.
Are you willing to pay more

I don't like the dim light of downtown....
It will happen
I don't like it
What downtown? Three blocks of no parking, delivery vans double
parking and stop lights at every intersection. Best time to shop is
when the street is closed. Close Queen St. "business district"and
make it pedestrian friendly all year.
there isn't enough room downtown for development. We need businesses
here ALL year not just in the summer
We need more affordable shopping which means we need a big box store
such as Target or even a Marks on the highway.
LET OUR DOWNTOWN BE, BOX STORES, ACCOMODATION AMD TOURISM SHOULD BE
WHERE TOURISTS WI SEE AND STAOP ON THIER WAY BY
but the down town is a must to keep up, and to develop it and keep
all those beautiful stores going, to get the new development and the
old, work to benefit each other. Seeing many towns that built up with
huge box stores on the outskirts of town, shows how it affect the
downtown in a major way, look at Pembroke Ontario.
those making giving the approval for development should realize that
not everyone is able to drive. Also as a tourist town the downtown
should be vibrant not a ghost town
We need, and most of us locals want, to keep our downtown alive and
vibrant. We have too much to offer and most of that cannot be seen
from the highway.
We need more in this town. There is nothing to keep people or
visitors here. Our taxes keep going up but for what. I have been
here for 33 years. It is getting to the point We want to move.
Keep Shoppers at Home and it will help the downtown businesses.
Everyone is in Port Elgin, Hanover Owen Sound & Goderich.
Kincardine put in a bypass what do we expect,. No one goes into the
highway is for new development, downtown is for redevelopment. Like
another small grocery store.
We need some new business on the highway. Downtown could use a
grocery store again for us seniors
There is more parking available and attracts people passing through
to shop as most wouldn't venture downtown.
No good highways, no tourists, then no need for better downtown
Big stores on the highway and boutique stores downtown.
Kincardine needs to come out of the Dark Ages!! People in this town
go out of town to shop anyways - at least with Hwy. development of
business/services, etc., not only will it create much needed jobs
but may entice people to shop locally! Kincardine can no longer
afford to remain a "quaint little town"!!
Yes, developed the highway area. the land is there and so is the
traffic. As far as the down town is concerned, fill a few of the
empty stores that are there now and for God's sake get rid of that
cheap clothing store that has been trying to close for the last 20
years and put a decent store there.
We need some bigger stores. A Marks Work Wearhouse would be nice and
maybe a department store like Walmart or Target they would bring
people to town and maybe stop downtown
We need more stores to serve the community. Even for a spool of
thread we have to go outside of town. There are several stores that
are needed. As we get older,we do not leave town.
Parking is always an issue downtown.
While the comments section doesn't work
It's a trend because businesses go where the traffic is and that's
the highway. Downtown kincardine is suffering from poor management,
they need to hire someone who's focus isn't purely on his favourite
downtown restaurant and has a background in downtown development.
The downtown are seems stagnate buiness wise. It is nice to see it
get restored and beautified, but as far as new development the
highway area seems more practical and useful.
Let's keep our highways clear for travel
Not much room for development downtown. We really need a large
department like store. The downtown will survive. People still like
to buy "different" things from what department stores offer. Lots of
great places to stay in this town, but shopping not so great. Also
could use more good quality but not overpriced restaurants.
Get on with it. Downtown has nowhere to expand and very limited
parking capability. The highway is a natural progression and
development is wanted and needed!
Depends what is meant by h'way development, not another hotel !!!
I would like to see the downtown used and even modernized. However
there is not space downtown for larger development. If we want these
larger business they have to development on the highway and we need
It is important to keep highways in good condition. The amount of
traffic is very high. Many people travel greater distances to get to
The highway portion was built as a "bypass" to allow transportation
around Kincardine so as not to delay vehicles as Port Elgin does.
This development is creating new traffic lights and if it continues,
soon it will be quicker to travel through Kincardine's downtown
yes - that is where the land is available along with the visitors
go for a drive thru Port Elgin, they r growing in leaps and bounds
all on a highway,, town is booming while kincardine developes next
They need to provide stores that will keep people shopping in town
instead of shopping in Godrich or Port
Highway services are well represented for travelers from point A to
B. A vibrant downtown is essential for tourism along the beach, and
for local residents who do not drive or chose not to. Shame that the
This has taken way too long and we have already lost many new
residents and business (tax base) opportunities to towns like Port
Elgin and Hanover that have been open to these developments.
The types of stores Kincardine needs do not locate in the downtown
core. They will help keep our retail alive.
Kincardine definitely needs some stores on the highway such as what
Port Elgin has.
This is a Beautiful Town don't ruin it by turning it into another
Mississauga. I moved here the Beauty. Keep the businesses downtown
where people can walk to there favourite store.
There isn't enought parking downtown as it is now. Expansion on the
highway will give retailers the freedom to build big stores and
parking lots that will be welcomed by all customers.
Once summer is over downtown is dead. Only new thing downtown is
Dairy Queen and its closed for a while.
Need both, highway development with attract people to Kincardine who
can go downtown.
No one is going to get off the 21 to drive down a hick town downtown
street. Highway development is the only option. Let's be honest all
the traffic is heading for Port Elgin, Owen Sound or elsewhere.
There seems to be a clouded belief - Kincardine is more then just a
retirement home type community
We need good roads , tourist ,with word of mouth ,can tell others
,how good our roads are, Will bring in more tourist!
Downtown is a ghost town
We need big business ".need more choice for purchasing. Town
shopping is to expenses
If there is vacant stores downtown they should be used first.
TOTALLY! We need better shopping and the highway is the answer -
need a big box store of some sort.
when we go into shop we go in the highway and shop for groceries,
gas, liquor, drug stores, more groceries and beer. Why do we want to
go downtown. Do our banking on the internet.,
Development of any kind has to be good for the town and all in it .
It's a no-brainer. Out on the highway, there is a lot of freedom for
proper-sized establishments, and parking should not be a problem if
the planning is done well. There is no room for expansion downtown
without tearing down or crowding out our heritage sites, and then
there is no parking areas left.
Keep the development downtown, and the highway free for driving.
there is no more room downtown to develop any more stores
the downtown core is vital to any growth
you need a viable downtown core
I feel it is important to draw people downtown so that the "true"
Kincardine can be seen and experienced. This includes our beach and
historic Queen Street. If all development continues on the highway,
the downtown will suffer and possibly be gone in a few years. Then
we will just be another strip mall town on a highway.
Kincardine needs a better selection of competitive shopping instead
of craft stores downtown ?? If you have to leave town for some items
you might as well complete the remainder of your shopping elsewhere
