Saugeen Shores town staff held a special 'Adopt a Garden' open forum on April 22nd, Earth Day, at the Rotary Hall in the Plex, Port Elgin.

The idea is to get residents together to plant and maintain one of the 11 gardens in the community.  Those that are up for adoption are: Southampton Town Hall's Chistmas tree location, main steps and glass door;  Harbour Planters; Southampton Library; Port Elgin Harbour Walkway; Port Elgin Fire Department; Port Elgin Tourist Camp; Southampton Flag; Harbourlite Restaurant Beach parking; Port Elgin Library - north, east and west sides; Coulter Parkette; Chamber Parkette (4 gardens).

Designs must be submitted to the Town offices for review by May 14 with approval by May 28

While there are restrictions such as pre-existing benches must remain in place, materials such as rock and wood can be used.  There are also constraints when it comes to plantings:

  • trees and shrubs are to be pruned

  • mature height of trees should not exceed 6.5 feet or be placed so as not to block any views

  • plantings to be considered are native, drought tolerant, gravel garden, habitat garden for birds, butterflies

  • interest gardens for children

Invasive species or noxious plants are strictly prohibited.

Business, individuals, organizations, families or clubs may adopt a garden after submitting an application to the town which will then be approved by a Selection Committee.  Approval must be given before work can begin.
