Congratulations to Jack Riley who was the recipient of the Tommy Cooper Award in Elmwood last Friday evening! Jack recently chaired the International Plowing Match (IPM) 2008 and has been involved with Bruce County Federation, Bruce County Plowmen's Association and established the Bruce Heritage Association with its own annual antiques and steam show at the Heritage Farm from  the 1993 IPM. He is also involved in the Food Grains Bank project and serves in municipal politics. 
 
Also congratulations to Dennis Watson, Chesley High School teacher, who received the Bruce County Federation's Award of Merit. Dennis developed the Agri-Business Specialist High Skills Major program to prepare students for careers in agricultural business, tailoring English and math skills for post-secondary agricultural programs at Ridgetown College and the University of Guelph. 
 
Congratulations also to many volunteers of the Roots of Bruce program which celebrated its 15th anniversary! More than 700 students attended and participated at the displays and demonstrations in Walkerton on Wednesday and Thursday of last week.
 
More than 400 walkers participated in the MS walk on Sunday in Kincardine. Fund-raising activities will continue this month. 
 
The Ripley Dairy Club had its first meeting on Wednesday evening. This year's topic will be Nutrition. Next meeting will be May 12 with animal registration papers, and membership money due too. All registration papers are now available on the 4-H Ontario website. If you know of someone who would like to join 4-H, please encourage them to contact a 4-H leader right away. For Dairy - Alec Martin, Jim and Fran Farrell; Sheep - Anne MacInnes, Steve Hallam;  Beef - Donna Bridge; Vet - Ken Bridge; Conservation - Anne MacInnes, Fran Farrell. 
 
There was a good Purple Grove representation at the funeral for Harvey Nicholson on Wednesday.
 
About 65 folks attended the retirement party for Doug MacDonald from the Township of Huron-Kinloss. Everyone enjoyed the dinner and entertainment. Among the gifts Doug received were a miniature grader, a watch, and a wonderful pair of suspenders.
 
Glad to hear the baby shower for Tammy Thompson on Sunday was well-attended. Tammy received many lovely gifts.
 
It was a busy week at Purple Grove Community Centre - Monday a goodly number of folks were at the Arbour Day and Cleaning Bee; Wednesday night the Women's Institute ladies fed the Lions Club from Ripley. Thanks to everyone who helped at both of those events. We're all looking forward  to the spaghetti supper on Saturday, April 24 - please note the date change.

Agnes and Bill Folmer of Chepstow spent the day on Sunday with Marilyn and Don Reid.
 
Deanna Scott attended a family shower in Listowel for Darlene Currie Hartung's son's fiance.
 
Many of the  ladies from the area attended the 4 C's conference at Jackson's Point this weekend.
 
Maureen and Roy Collins visited with Shirley Gilders of Clinton and Ray Gilders of Goderich during the week.
 
Seems this is the crunch time for the university and college students with their final exams and papers. Keep up the good work, students. It is good to see that some of our other students have finished their exams and are home again.
 
The Martins and the Finnies were honored at a special mass for their upcoming 25th wedding anniversaries. For the Finnies, it was extra special as Judy and Sam Finnie will be celebrating their 50th anniversary this year.

Mary Black and Betty Scott had supper with Mary Anne Kukoly Thursday evening to celebrate Mary's 87th birthday. Also joining in were Judy, Wayne and Joe Murray and Matt Black. Mary Anne  visited with Joyce McEwan and Mary Beth Kerr on Sunday.
 
The Women's Institute Rose Program has had a date change to April 30. It will still be held at the Purple Grove Community Centre at 2 p.m. sharp.  

Sympathy from the community goes to Meg and Will Van Rooyen and their family on the death of their daughter and sister, Ruth. She spent some of her growing up years in the Purple Grove Community and will be missed.

The 4-H Conservation club's first meeting is on April 27 at 7:30 p.m., at the Purple Grove Community Centre. Please contact Anne MacInnes for more information.

Sympathy is extended to the family of Pat Mead of Ripley whose funeral was on Monday.
