April has been a record month for new home construction in Huron-Kinloss.

The township almost doubled the number of building permits issued compared to this time last year, and more than doubled the construction value for new homes compared to last month.

In the report by chief building official Matt Farrell, 32 permits were issued in April, up from 18 permits in March, with a total construction value of $4.2 million, compared to $2.3 million in March. Of those, new residential building totalled $3.67 million, up from $1.77 million in March.

The report does not state how many homes the $3.67 million represents; however, March's $1.77-million figure represented seven new houses.

The township has issued a total of 56 building permits, with a construction value of $6.9 million, for the first four months of 2010, compared to 32 permits, with a construction value of $2.15 million for this time last year.

The building report will be discussed at the township general committee meeting tonight (May 3) at 7 p.m.
