Break and Enter - Jewellery and Cash Stolen. Two commercial businesses were broken into during the early morning hours of May 10, 2010. The first entry occurred at approximately 3:15am. Police were dispatched to an alarm at a Jewellery store in Southampton. Police officers arrived to find that the lock had been removed from the front door. A number of rings were stolen from the business. A second break in occurred to a business on Goderich Street in Port Elgin. This entry happened at approximately 4:50am. In a fashion similar to the first crime, entry was made by removing the lock in the front door. The cash register drawer was forced open and cash was stolen. Police would like to contact the driver of an SUV, possibly a grey or silver Toyota or Nissan that was driving southbound on Highway 21 between Southampton and Port Elgin at approximately 3:15am on May 10th. The driver would have seen two police cruisers driving north with their emergency lights activated and would have been traveling in the same direction as three large transport trucks. The driver of this vehicle may be able to assist police and is asked to contact Saugeen Shores Police Service at 519-832-9200. The investigating officer is Constable Chris Coles. Fraud On May 11th, police received a complaint of the fraudulent use of a credit card. The victim had used his credit card on May 10th at a local gas bar in Port Elgin. He forgot the card on the counter. Another customer at the business subsequently found and stole the credit card. Later that day the card was used to make purchases at four other businesses in Owen Sound and Port Elgin. An attempt was made to use the card a fifth time at which time the card was rejected. Saugeen Shores Police were able to identify the persons responsible be examining security video from the locations where the card was stolen and used. A male, age 44, from Saugeen First Nation, has been charged with theft. A female, age 46, from Sauble Beach, has been charged with three counts of fraud.

Break and Enters On Sunday May 9th at 10:40am a resident on Grey Street in Southampton made an alarming discovery in his garage. The owner had heard noises and while checking for the source found a man inside the garage. This man was escorted off the property and police were contacted. Police officers attended and a short time later were able to locate a suspect. A male, age 44, from Bruce Township, was arrested and charged with Break and Enter. He was also charged with Failing to comply with an Undertaking as he had been consuming alcohol in contravention of his conditions. The accused was held in custody for a show cause hearing. Since this incident, police have received reports of four other break and enters and three attempt break and enters to residences in Southampton. The majority of the incidents were located in the area of Front Street along the lakefront. All of the incidents are believed to be connected and the investigation is ongoing.
