Cindy Schmidt and Amanda Farrell of Bruce Community Futures Development Corporation updated Town Council on Monday night about the Corporation's business activities for 2010.

The organization, in operation for 23 years, helps provide both financial and technical support  and through the self-employment benefit program.

"We have completed a skills training program," Schmidt told Council, "that has injected $40,000 into entrepreneurial programs and we are hopeful that this will continue and increase into the next year."

Farrell said that what the organization does is to foster economic growth.  "We are doing a lot of regional initiatives of late," she explained, "and in particular, in the mid-Western Green Jobs Strategy where we work closely with Regional Tourism."

They also explained that the Corporation is undertaking a regional seniors' needs study.  "We are trying to identify what lies ahead in our area as the baby boomers age and how best to serve the needs of seniors now and in the future."

Schmidt said that they are going to become more proactive in coming before Council on a regular basis.  "The challenge is," said Schmidt, "that councils change and staff changes and that's where something like the Small Business Development Centre comes in, for continuity.

With a loan portfolio of $2.8 million, the Corporation has put $475,000 out into the Saugeen Shores community.
