Rotary recognizes community contributions with Paul Harris awards |

Southampton Rotary presented its highest distinction, the Paul Harris Fellowship Awards, on Wednesday night, May 19. The awards are named for Paul Harris, who founded Rotary with three business associates in Chicago in 1905. The Fellowship was established in his honor in 1957 to express appreciation for a contribution of $1000 US to the humanitarian and educational programs of the Rotary Foundation. The programs were set out to include an array of projects that save and invigorate the lives of people around the world and enhance international friendship and understanding. Foundation programs provide educational opportunities, food, potable water, health care, immunizations, and shelter for millions of people. These activities are funded, implemented and managed by Rotarians and Rotary clubs around the globe. Rotarians also designate a Paul Harris Fellow however, to recognize those whose lives demonstrate a shared purpose with the objectives and Mission of The Rotary Foundation to build world understanding and Peace. The selection committee recommends candidates from the Club and/or the community to the board based on an individual’s demonstrated commitment to “Service above self”." This year's Paul Harris selection committee, after much consideration, chose four deserving candidates - Mike Sterling, Delores Sullivan, Bruce Waechter and Henry Weickert. The awards were presented by Ann Iles from Wiarton, Assistant District Governor of District 6330.
Sterling has been part of the Southampton community for most of his life. Over the years, he was one of the founders of the Chantry Island Restoration Project, leading volunteers and speaking to community groups and service clubs while handling the fundraising. He also created a sculpture, 'The Helix', for the local Museum, is a published author and has also produced several variety shows over the years, honouring veterans on Remembrance Day. More recently, Sterling has tutored young students who are gifted in math and he also creates music and art from mathematical concepts. He helps many in the community with computer projects and, generally, goes about his life quietly making a difference.
Delores Sullivan Sullivan moved to Southampton in 2003 to be closer to her family and to open a superb women's fashion store built on her retail experiences in Toronto. Her corporate philosophy includes supporting agencies and services throughout the community. Sullivan's philanthropy is reflected in significant donations to the local Saugeen Memorial Hospital, the Southampton Rotary Club, the Chambettes and the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre. She quietly does many other things for people in the community that, she explains, "are just little things". Little to her, but huge in the eyes of the recipients.

Ann Iles presents award to Bruce Waechter(L) as MC, Don White, looks on Waechter is current President of the Southampton Rotary until June. He was instrumental in the development of Perkins Rotary Park and recruited a cadre of Rotary Volunteers who have remained active in the park. Waechter has also recruited many new members to Rotary, bringing a new pool of talent to the club's work in the community and abroad. He is an avid curler and is President of the Southampton Curling Club in addition to being Sargeant at Arms for the Southampton Probus Club. Ann Iles 'pins' Henry Weickert Weickert is Past President of Southampton Rotary who is also serving as Foundation Chairman. In the past year, he has reviewed he Rotary Charitable Association records, has improved the Auction management with computer technology and has also used his carpentry skills to help with community projects. Iles also said that he will serve as District Treasurer for 2010/2011.
