Second store also targeted

Two retail outlets were  targeted by robbers early Monday morning, May 10, in Saugeen Shores.

The first store that was robbed was Vincent Jewellery in Southampton shortly after 3:00 a.m. Monday morning. The thieves drilled the lock on the front door and removed the cylinder.  Local police responded within four minutes after the store alarm was sounded but the robbers had already fled the scene with gold and diamonds, indicating that the culprits knew what they were after.

Shortly after the first robbery, a second store was broken into in Port Elgin at 4:52 a.m..  Although police cannot confirm that it was the same suspects in both incidents, the 'modus operandi' was the same and both stores had the same locks on their front doors.

Both store owners felt the same about the robbery.

"It's a real invasion of your space," said Walter Mackowski, owner of Vincent Jewellery.  "We've had other incidents such as broken windows by people who have been drinking, but in our 50 years of business, we haven't had anything like this happen."

Marie Henderson, owner of Colour Your World in Port Elgin, agreed.  "I'm only relieved that they didn't do any damage in the store.  They broke the cash register and took the money that was in it but it could have been much worse."

Both retailers agreed that it was only the speedy response by local police that prevented further damage to their businesses.

Police suspect that the same culprits were involved in both incidents given that the locks on both front doors were the same and removed in the same way.

The incidents are under investigation.
