I

I've been thinking about language lately.  Language has probably arisen because next week I am going with our son's class to Quebec City.  I do not speak French, though others on this trip speak French quite ably.  Relying on them, I know that I will get by.  A previous experience in Quebec left me grateful for the graciousness I experienced there amidst my inability to articulate a well spoken word in French.  Polite smiles, a nod of the head and the willingness of strangers to speak my first language, their second, left me relieved and humbled.

The enormous privilege I live with as an English speaking person leaves me humbled at moments.  I can take so much for granted.  I can live with so many assumptions.

Our children attend a school where French immersion is an option.  Ojibway language classes are also offered for First Nations students.  At one point, a sign language choir was taught as well.  Four languages being taught in a small school is such a gift in this time.  This gift reminds me of how many people in the world know more than one language.

I want to stay with the struggle though.  Language has much to teach me about how I am privileged, the assumptions with which I live and the respect I have for people who speak multiple languages.  Next week will be a challenge in some ways.  I will need help, probably lots of it.  When you stop and think about it that isn't such a bad thing, is it?
